Back to hiking

Day 30: Lake St Clair

We got up this morning, had a little breakfast, and tried to post some of our older blogs before heading out to our next destination. We drove through mountains and forests, and were happy to see our old friends, the grazing sheep again! We had a bit of a late start, so we arrived in Lake St Clair in the afternoon, and went straight to our hike through the forest by the lake. It was a nice walk, punctuated by us seeing a pademelon (a type of small wallaby that looks like a really big rat that hops) and a wallaby in the wild! That was very cool!

When we got back to the visitor’s centre, we had a quick lunch and went back on the road to do another two walks before dark. One walk took us through a lush rainforest by a wild river; and the second took us through another rainforest to a raging waterfall that was spectacular. Both walks were fairly short but walking through the forest with the crisp air and towering trees was so peaceful. Gaurav was hoping to see a snake, since Australia is know to have the 10 most deadliest snakes, but no luck on the snakes so far (as Rachna sighs with relief).

After our walks, we made the drive down to our final destination, a little ocean town called Strahan (pronounce strawn). The drive was a bit precarious, once again taking us through dark and windy mountain roads, but we made it! We even saw a Tasmanian devil along the way! Crazy little animal just like the cartoon character, but almost all black in colour. We went around to find a hotel, booked a room, checked in, then went to the one-street town for dinner. We got back from dinner fairly early, but exhausted, and just rested for the night.

Last hike of the day...
